Interview

Select an individual or studio to interview in the field of your choice (digital product design, visual design, independent graphic design studio, architecture, illustration, etc.) to learn about their approach to a portfolio. In addition to being helpful for you to consider their point of view, your interview will also be included in a group publication.

It’s up to you and your subject to define the goal of your conversation, but it would be nice if your interview could have a practical, how-to / help, component for future students in your situation (preparing their portfolios). As a final deliverable you will submit your interview transcript (in Korean + English), along with relevant imagery.

Before contacting your interview subject, do research on 2-3 potential subjects and present about them in a ~8 min slideshow to the class. From Sept. 30 to Oct. 21 a set number of students will present on their potential subjects each class – please sign up here: Presentation Sign Up Sheet ↗

In summary your interview should:

  • include an introduction with biographical information on your subject
  • be ~1500 words in length
  • be bilingual (this will add to the total length)
  • should include imagery you select – this can be images of your subjects work, images you create inspired by your interview, or works related to topics discussed, etc. and they should be visually cohesive

To get started with your interview, I would suggest asking the following the following questions.

  • What are some important things for a young designer to consider when making their portfolio?
  • How did you decide your career path, and what is important to consider when deciding your career path?
  • How did you get started in your first job after school?
  • Looking back to when you graduated from school, what's one thing you know now that you wish you knew then?

and adding to them with at least 2 additional questions of your own.

The professor, along with any student volunteers, will reformat the interviews for a group publication launching the last day of class.

  • 09/30 – 10/21: Presentations sharing your interview subject with the class
  • 11/11: Interview transcript and imagery due
  • 12/09: Publication team (chris + student volunteer(s)) shares final interview publication with the class
